On Thursday, a unified statement from a coalition comprising all 25 Republican governors expressed support for Governor Greg Abbott’s endeavors to assert what he argues is Texas’ “constitutional right to self-defense.” The statement claimed the country had been left vulnerable to unprecedented levels of illegal immigration along the southern border.
“We stand in solidarity with our fellow Governor, Greg Abbott, and the State of Texas in utilizing every tool and strategy, including razor wire fences, to secure the border,” read the statement. The last Republican governor to sign it was Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen, who said, “The failure to secure our border has created a massive flow of illegal drugs, national security and terrorism risks, and a humanitarian crisis.”
Trump’s Call To Action
The statement comes after Texas defied the Supreme Court ruling to remove razor wire from the southern border. After the statement was issued, Trump called on any “willing” states to deploy their national guards to Texas, saying, “We encourage all willing States to deploy their guards to Texas to prevent the entry of Illegals, and to remove them back across the Border.”
Federalizing The Texas National Guard
In response, Democrats have urged President Biden to seize and federalize the Texas National Guard. Texas Congressman Joaquin Castro, who represents the San Antonio area, wrote on X (formerly Twitter): “@POTUS needs to establish sole federal control of the Texas National Guard now.”
White House Response
White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre responded by saying, “We want to make sure we get something done at the border. That’s why we have been having these conversations with Senate Republicans and Democrats for the past several weeks to come up with a bipartisan agreement to deal with the border…Governor Abbott is not interested in that, he wants to politicize an issue, and he’s not helping communities, he actually isn’t, and he’s actually putting border patrol agents in harm’s way by doing what he’s doing.”
Biden Calls For Support
President Biden is asking Republican Senators to support a deal aimed at addressing immigration, with a target of securing at least $14 billion for migrants. Biden said, “Next week, we’re gonna be able to work out something, at least in the Senate, and I’m hopeful it is going to be the bipartisan package the Senate is going to pass.”
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell is teetering on the brink of dismantling a bipartisan agreement encompassing funding for border security and assistance to Ukraine. The driving force behind this potential breakdown is Donald Trump, who has been actively encouraging Republicans to reject any agreement.
In a private meeting, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell told Republican Senators that “politics have changed” on immigration because Trump is focusing his campaign around it. He also said, “We don’t want to do anything to undermine him.” This is a reversal from his original position because earlier this week he said Congress needed to pass the border security bill.
Democrats have reportedly made significant policy concessions during negotiations on the Senate deal. Agreements include provisions like increasing the criteria for asylum qualification, implementing quicker deportation processes for certain migrants within the country, and incorporating a trigger mechanism that effectively halts asylum-seeking if border encounters reach certain levels. Negotiators are also exploring the establishment of an entirely new process for administrations to expel asylum-seekers who do not pass their initial screening.
Governor Abbott has been using various methods to try and combat what he calls an “invasion.” Texas has been busing thousands of illegal immigrants to Democrat-led states such as New York and California. Several busloads of migrants were dropped off on Christmas Eve near Vice President Kamala Harris’ D.C. residence.
Over the past four years, the United States has seen the largest spike in illegal immigration ever. Over 300,000 illegal crossings occurred in December. That’s equivalent to the population of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Importance To Voters
Immigration is a big concern for Americans. According to a recent Harvard University poll, immigration has replaced inflation as the top issue for voters.
Democrat Mayor’s Struggling With Migrant Influx
New York City Mayor Eric Adams said the migrant issue is an “unprecedented emergency.” He also said, “Our shelter system is full, and we are nearly out of money, staff, and space…we may very well be forced to cut or curtail programs New Yorkers rely on, and the pathway to house thousands more is uncertain.” New York City has since emptied schools and other buildings to house migrants.
Impact On The 2024 Presidential Election
Polls suggest that Biden’s prospects for reelection face challenges due to his immigration policies. Concerns about the influx of migrants are viewed as a significant problem, particularly in states like New York and California. A recent poll by Harvard showed that 57% of voters preferred Donald Trump’s policies on the economy, immigration, and crime.
Impact On Other Elections
Biden’s policy is not helping down-ballot Democrats either. This is reflected in low approval ratings for New York City Mayor Eric Adams and Governor Kathy Hochul, particularly in response to their management of the migrant issue.
