Going out to eat? It’s more than just food; it’s about being with others. But, we all need to mind our manners. From how we treat the staff to how we act with other diners, our behavior matters. Check out these common mistakes to make sure you’re not “that” person at the restaurant.
Not Respecting Reservation Times

Showing up way too early or way too late for your reservation can mess up the restaurant’s schedule and make it hard for them to serve other customers. If you know you’re going to be more than a few minutes late, it’s polite to call the restaurant and let them know. That way, they can plan accordingly and make sure everyone gets served on time.
Sending Food Back Repeatedly

It’s okay to send a dish back if there’s something really wrong with it, like if it’s cold or not cooked right. But if you keep sending food back for little reasons or after you’ve already eaten a lot of it, it can come across like you’re trying to get a free meal. That’s not cool and can make things tough for the restaurant staff.
Loud and Boisterous Conversations

Going out to eat is a time to socialize and have fun, but it’s important to keep an eye on how loud you’re being. If you’re having a really loud conversation or laughing super hard, it can bug other people who are trying to enjoy their meals in peace. Just be aware of your volume and try to keep it at a reasonable level.
Ignoring Your Server

Your server is there to make sure you have a good time and get what you need. If you keep ignoring them when they come to your table or don’t even look at them when they’re talking to you, it’s really rude. Plus, it can make it harder for them to do their job and get you what you want.
Complaining About Everything

If there’s a real problem with your food or the service, it’s okay to say something. But if you’re constantly complaining about every little thing, it can be really tiring for the staff and can ruin the mood for other people trying to enjoy their meals. Try to keep the complaints to a minimum and only bring up the big stuff.
Modifying Dishes Excessively

It’s fine to ask for small changes to a dish if you have allergies or dietary needs. But if you’re constantly asking for a bunch of modifications and changes, it can be a pain for the kitchen staff and might not make the dish taste as good as it’s supposed to. Try to stick to the menu as much as you can.
Allowing Children to Run Amok

Kids can be unpredictable, but it’s not okay to let them run around the restaurant, yell, or bother other people trying to eat. It’s important to teach kids how to behave in a restaurant from a young age. If they start acting up, it’s up to the parents to keep them in check.
Using Phones Loudly

Taking a call at the table or having your phone volume turned all the way up so everyone can hear your notifications is really distracting. If you absolutely have to take a call, step outside or keep it short and quiet. And maybe put your phone on vibrate so it’s not constantly making noise.
Overstaying Your Welcome

It’s great to catch up with friends or family over a meal, but be aware of when the restaurant is busy. If there are people waiting for a table and you’ve been done eating for a while, it’s polite to free up the table so someone else can have a turn. Don’t linger too long if you know others are waiting.
Not Tipping Appropriately

Tipping is how you show your server that you appreciate their hard work. If you regularly don’t tip enough (or at all), especially when the service was good, it’s seen as really disrespectful. Make sure you’re tipping fairly based on the service you received.
Snapping Fingers for Attention

Your server is a person, not a dog. Snapping your fingers or making loud, impatient noises to get their attention is super rude. It can make their job way harder and more stressful. If you need something, try to catch their eye politely or wait until they come to your table. Treat them with respect, and they’ll do their best to take care of you.
Bringing Outside Food or Drinks

Unless it’s something special like a birthday cake that you’ve arranged with the restaurant beforehand, it’s not cool to bring in your own food or drinks. It’s disrespectful to the restaurant and the people who work hard to make the food there. Plus, it can be against health codes and get the restaurant in trouble. Stick to what’s on the menu, and everyone will be happier.
